The Sombering

Today I had the opportunity to fill in the role of a legal advocate. I went down to LA to the Department of Public Social Service to try and acquire food stamps transportation and housing for an individual who identified as homeless.

My client Paul was a bear of a man, he had the sweetest disposition and he had such patience. By the time I met up with him he had already been at the facility for 3 hours without being seen. It was shocking to try and navigate a system that believes everyone is suspicious of fraud, or believes you have the burden of proof to persuade them that you need assistance. Of course much of the tension within the facility could be attributed to the automatic position of negative attitude coming from suspicion.  And understandably if you work everyday ina  place wher eyou encounter people who are sad, angry and projecting at you, you will react back. However I was humbled to see Paul coping with the situation and especially since he was diagnosed with severe depression, if i were in his place I would have a little breakdown. Of course if you have had to navigate this process a few times before I suppose you would be used to disappointment.

Finally by 6pm Paul was able to get emergency meal tickets, two transportation coins and a voucher to stay at the local shady motel.
There is such a tenuaous relationship between service that should be provided to the public in a humane way and the bureacracy behind it to make all possible limitations to this service. I did not see much compassion or humanity at this facility and I can only be thankful that there are groups such as the public counsel and legal aid to align themselves with disenfranchised clients to maintain the goal of humane service.

My thoughts are with you Paul, stay safe and guard all your stuff in Skid Row!

Wowsers, it's truly been a long time. I'm currently in MN on break from school and it's 4 degrees out. Although I don't think my skin has gotten any thinner since being out in California, I'm actually enjoying this weather.

Came back from the post office a couple minutes ago and seriously, there needs to be a therapist on site at every juncture that has a customer service transaction. Gladly I had my ipod on hand which saved me from listening to all of the grinchy people on board.

And speaking of customer service transactions, on my red eye plane ride out here I don't think I have ever had a more stereotypical ride. First of all there were two babies on board not one, one of them was screaming something terrible. This drove the passangers nuts (I was just waiting until we got to the right altitude so my ipod could save me) one of the passangers chastised the mother and told her she NEEDS to DO something! Another one remarked, "You should put that baby in a plastic bag and under the seat" Normally I would be pretty annoyed at mothers and their babies, I don't care too much for them myself but wow, it's been a while since I've witnessed that type of visciousness.
In addition the thick accented  Midwestern in front of me believed that the  flight attendant  had a vendetta against him (because she asked him to put his tray table up, his cell phone away, his seat back and his pomeranian under the dog because passangers are allergic to dogs) and  continually complained-through unnecessary language-about her.

Maybe I'm passive aggressive b/c obviously I'm being complainly though this xanga blog but these customer service transactions I've witnessed in the midwest has reinforced the idea that people all over the place, not jsut Orange and Los Angeles county need therapy!

In other news, here is a panda dog

Oh also, you know when I'm idle when I start taking ideas from other sites and using it on my own, (thanks Lucia)
